Our Future’s People – SWEA -Wales [UK]

Our Future’s People is a sustainable energy project for secondary schools. The project aims to reduce school’s energy use and improve the sustainability of their operations whilst providing students with a valuable educational opportunity that will help them to develop a range of transferrable skills, increase their self-confidence and develop an awareness of environmental issues and the wide range of employment opportunities available within the ever expanding ‘green economy’. A team of students is recruited to lead the project activities in each school. They carry out a technical energy survey of their school premises and report their findings along with an action plan for improving the sustainability of their school’s energy use to Governors and Senior Management. They then implement energy awareness campaigns to encourage positive behaviour change among staff, students and the wider community. The project is being implemented in 5 schools in Powys, Wales, this academic year and will be implemented in a further 5 schools next year.
