In September and October 2024, ManagEnergy facilitated four Work Shadowing visits, connecting energy agencies across Europe to exchange knowledge and experiences in sustainable energy practices. These visits allowed 24 participants to gain insights into the operations of leading energy agencies, with interactive sessions, site tours, and collaborative discussions. This initiative, aimed at fostering the internal organisation of agencies, complements the training provided in ManagEnergy’s Master Classes and Expert Missions. With a focus on the day-to-day activities of agencies, the Work Shadowing program enables participants to learn about innovative services, effective organisational strategies, and practical solutions that can be implemented within their own organisations.
ENERGAP, Maribor, Slovenia (25-26 September 2024)
Hosted by the Energy and Climate Agency of Podravje (ENERGAP), this visit allowed participants from several European countries to explore ENERGAP's approach to regional energy initiatives. Key discussions revolved around stakeholder engagement, financing mechanisms for public-private partnerships, and sustainable tourism. A highlight was a tour of a zero-CO2 kindergarten featuring innovative energy solutions, offering practical insights into integrating sustainability into public buildings.
REGEA, Zagreb, Croatia (9-10 October 2024)
At the North-West Croatia Regional Energy and Climate Agency (REGEA), participants were introduced to the agency’s projects in sustainable building and climate adaptation. The two-day agenda included site visits to a clinic with a photovoltaic installation and the Bračak Energy Centre, which showcased REGEA’s commitment to regional renewable energy projects. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on financing models, collaboration with municipalities, and practical solutions for climate resilience.
ESV, Upper Austria (15-16 October 2024)
The Regional Energy Agency of Upper Austria (ESV) focused its visit on energy communities, renewable heating, working with companies, and youth engagement. The visit included interactive discussions and tours of a bioenergy combined heat and power (CHP) plant and a renewable heating manufacturer. ESV also highlighted its innovative “E-Factory” school programme, which aims to interest students in energy transition professions.
AURA-EE, Lyon, France (22-23 October 2024)
The Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Energy and Environment Agency (AURA-EE) showcased its multi-funder model, highlighting the flexibility and independence it brings. Key sessions covered financing, community energy projects, public building renovation, and regional energy data tools like the TerriSTORY tool. Participants explored AURA-EE's collaborative frameworks and support systems, aimed at streamlining assistance for smaller municipalities, and discussed tools for regional climate adaptation.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening European Cooperation
The ManagEnergy Work Shadowing visits provided an invaluable opportunity for participants to gain hands-on experience and build connections across Europe’s energy agencies. Key takeaways from these exchanges included innovative project financing models, approaches to stakeholder engagement, and the value of interagency collaboration. As energy agencies navigate the path toward carbon neutrality, these visits have fostered a network of professionals ready to implement new ideas and strengthen their local energy transitions. Stay tuned for future ManagEnergy initiatives that continue to support learning and collaboration in sustainable energy.
"As Host of a Work Shadowing visit, the 2-day interactive event was also an opportunity for us to learn about the structure, operation and services of other energy agencies in Europe. The in-depth exchange with ′sister organisations’ was interesting, insightful and inspiring."
Christiane Egger, Deputy Managing Director, Energy Agency of Upper Austria
