Free energy audits and training in public schools [CY]

Free energy audits and training in public schools [CY]

Six primary schools have been selected all over Cyprus in order to undergo an Energy Audit for free. The aim of these energy audits is to provide to each school an energy report, which will include interventions for energy and CO2 emissions savings in different levels, up to the nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) level.

More precisely, the aim is for these reports is to include individual measures for energy upgrade, measures for an energy upgrade to level B or A (according to the Cypriot standards and methodology) and lastly, measures for an energy upgrade to a nZEB (as defined in Cyprus). At the same time, a database with the most efficient measures for the energy upgrade of a typical school will
be created.

The project is technically supported by the Cyprus Energy Agency through the Interreg- Med project ‘TEESCHOOLS’, which aims at providing new solutions to Local Authorities, both in technical and financial terms, to implement Nearly Zero Energy Building renovation activities in Mediterranean Schools.

The energy audits have been completed and a parallel action related to the users’ behaviour, has begun. This regards the training [informing] of the students, the educational staff and the technical staff of the school on energy saving issues. The training will be provided for free to all the schools that participated to the energy audits but also in other schools that show interest. Along with the training, educational material which is produced within the framework of the TEESCHOOLS project and with the contribution of the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus, will be delivered to the schools.

On the other hand, CEA has also started to inform all the participating schools (principles, teachers, students and environmental committees) along with their respective school boards, about the results of the energy audits and the proposed measures for energy savings. They are also informed about the possible use of a simplified energy and environmental audit tool that derived from the project. The tool consists of 2 modules: the 1st one that calculates the energy index of the school building and estimates its energy performance and the 2nd one which calculates the potential energy and CO2 savings of the school building and helps in selecting the most promising renovation options.
