Description

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) has released a new report analysing energy consumption and savings across 1,300+ Covenant of Mayors signatories in the EU-27, showcasing their progress toward 2030 climate and energy targets. This report, based on data from Baseline Emission Inventories (BEIs), Monitoring Emission Inventories (MEIs), and the MyCovenant platform, highlights achievements and areas for improvement in transitioning to sustainable energy systems.

Key Insights from Covenant Signatories

Fossil Fuel Reliance

Despite efforts, fossil fuels still account for 65% of total energy consumption among Covenant signatories, with electricity and district heating contributing 25% and 7.5%, respectively.

Renewable Energy Growth

Covenant cities produce 1.17 MWh of renewable energy per capita annually, with solar photovoltaics leading the charge, supported by significant contributions from hydroelectric power.

Advances in Heating Systems

District heating and combined heat and power (CHP) systems are pivotal, with renewable energy use increasing by 22% in Monitoring Emission Inventories. Campaigns like Cities Heat Detox, aligned with Covenant goals, empower cities to phase out fossil fuels in heating systems.

Energy Efficiency Initiatives

Covenant signatories focus on reducing energy use through:

  • Electric and efficient vehicles.
  • Improved building insulation and energy efficiency.
  • Awareness campaigns and training programs for citizens and stakeholders.

Renewable Energy Actions

Covenant initiatives prioritise clean electricity generation, particularly through solar and hydroelectric power, underscoring their commitment to renewable solutions.

A Call for Continued Collaboration

The report highlights the significant role of Covenant of Mayors cities in driving the EU’s energy transition while emphasising the need for innovation and cooperation to overcome challenges and meet the 2030 climate targets.
