Managenergy Expert Mission to Cyprus Energy Agency

In July 2019, Christiane Egger from the Upper Austria (OÖ ESV) Energy Agency visited the Cyprus Energy Agency (CEA) to carry out another ManagEnergy Expert Mission.

Managenergy Expert Mission to Cyprus Energy Agency

The Cyprus Energy Agency (CEA) was established in 2009 with the mission of contributing to the conservation of resources, the protection of the environment and the improvement of the quality of life. Currently with a staff of 10, their vision is a just, inclusive and climate resilient Cyprus, governed by the principles of sustainability. In its recently adopted 2030 roadmap, the agency set 10 thematic priorities for the next decade. This includes energy efficiency, just transition, energy communities, renewables, climate change mitigation and adaptation and circular economy. The agency offers a range of services and had an extensive network of stakeholders in Cyprus and abroad.

Christiane Egger from The OÖ Energiesparverband, the regional energy agency of Upper Austria, spent three days in Cyprus from 9-11 July working with the agency, its staff and relevant stakeholders. The primary focus of the Expert Mission was to reflect on the agency’s current and future services and capacities for mobilising investments in sustainable energy projects – in the aim of strengthening their role in driving the clean energy transition.

During the first day, the team took a closer look at the agency’s current capacities, services and aspirations, also spending time carrying out in depth stakeholder mapping and envisioning potential future services, incomes steams and corresponding business models. On the second day, key stakeholders were brought together to discuss the topics of energy communities and policies in Cyprus. Representatives from ministries and municipalities, the scientific and technical chamber and Climate KIC Cyprus took part in the event. Main discussion points included the important role of energy agencies in driving the energy transition through project facilitation and market development, the promotion of energy policies in the business sector and solutions for low carbon economy in Cyprus.

Building on the interesting input gathered during the first two days of the mission, the CEA management team and Expert dedicated the third day to discussing the agency’s strategic development plan and future opportunities for collaboration between their organisations.

CEA is a well-established agency with engaged and dedicated staff. They have a clear vision and are motivated to deliver real value for the energy transition in Cyprus with and supporting investment projects. In the coming years, CEA will work towards its 2030 objectives and the roadmap recently established. To achieve this, CEA will emphasise on increasing capacity on financial instruments while capitalising on existing expertise, in order to become a key actor for project development and sustainable energy investment mobilisation in Cyprus. Among other, CEA will work on energy efficiency projects in public and private buildings, street lighting projects, climate adaptation actions and run local funding grant schemes to trigger further investments.
