The European Union's Equality Platform for the Energy Sector

The European Union is unwavering in its commitment to fostering equality and inclusion across all sectors. In 2021, the European Commission took a significant step in this direction by establishing the 'Equality Platform for the Energy Sector.'   

Promoting Equality in Energy 

The initiative aligns with the broader EU objective of strengthening equality and inclusion in all areas of activity. To kickstart this endeavor, a call was made to energy stakeholders from EU countries in August 2021. The goal was to gather insights into ongoing actions promoting equality and inclusion within the energy sector. 

Platform Membership 

Any organization representing the energy sector in the European Union has the opportunity to contribute to the platform's mission. By becoming a member, organisations join a collaborative effort to shape diverse and inclusive workplaces within the energy domain. The platform already boasts a diverse group of members, each contributing with unique perspectives and experiences. 

Objectives and Impact 

The primary objective of the platform is to fortify the commitment to equality in all its dimensions. This encompasses promoting workplaces that are not only diverse but also inclusive. As a forum for dialogue, the platform addresses equality-related issues and serves as a conduit for sharing tangible actions contributing to equality in the energy sector. 

The official launch of the Equality Platform occurred during the EU Sustainable Energy Week on October 25, 2021. Since then, it has become a dynamic hub for discussions, exchanges of experiences, and the spotlighting of best practices in promoting equality 

Equality and Energy: A Fundamental Connection 

In the broader context, equality and inclusion form the bedrock of the EU's principles, spanning dimensions such as gender, sex, race, religion, disability, age, and sexual orientation. These principles are not only fundamental rights but also drivers of economic growth and social well-being. 

Looking Ahead 

 Simultaneously, energy policy plays a pivotal role in achieving the EU's ambitious European Green Deal. As the EU charts its course to become climate-neutral by 2050, the energy sector's influence is set to grow, propelled by evolving technologies and new energy-related jobs. Recognizing the importance and benefits of diversity, the platform aims to actively promote equal opportunities at all levels.
