Empowering Municipalities with ISO 50001 and SECAP

Once limited to industry, ISO 50001 is now driving municipal sustainability, thanks to the Horizon 2020-backed Compete4SECAP project.

The Compete4SECAP project has enabled 28 municipalities to implement and certify an Energy Management System (EnMS) in just one year, achieving an impressive 8% reduction in energy consumption without requiring major investments. EnMS provides a structured framework, helping municipal staff streamline energy-saving measures, assign responsibilities, and manage data efficiently. This approach not only reduces energy costs but also frees up resources for other community priorities.

To further support municipalities, the project developed an online energy monitoring platform designed for energy managers with limited data experience. This tool, used by over 20 municipalities in Latvia and other EU countries for five years, offers dedicated modules for public buildings, lighting, and transport, tracking consumption trends to aid decision-making.

Since 2023, Latvia's Energy Efficiency Law requires all municipalities to adopt an EnMS, underscoring its environmental and economic benefits. Building on this success, the OwnYourSECAP project, co-funded by LIFE, is now integrating EnMS principles into the broader Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) framework. This expansion not only supports a greener future but also strengthens municipal resilience and fosters sustainable economic growth.
