Innovation in Action at Mount Lucas
The first day of the mission took place at the Mount Lucas National Construction Centre, a key hub for sustainable construction and training. Participants, including the MEA Working Group, engaged in site visits and expert presentations:
- Sustainable Construction: A tour of the NZEB and Retrofitting Training Facility highlighted Ireland’s advancements in energy-efficient building methods.
- Circular Bioeconomy: The Technological University of Shannon showcased how agri-food waste streams are transformed into sustainable products.
- Low-Carbon Urban Development: The Portlaoise Low Carbon Town project presented a replicable model for reducing urban emissions.
- Modern Methods of Construction: Experts introduced Ireland’s upcoming National MMC Demonstration Park, set to revolutionise sustainable building practices.
Digital Innovation and the Power of Data
The second day turned its focus to digital tools and governance, starting with an in-depth look at Portlaoise’s Low Carbon Town initiative. The discussions then moved to The Cube – Low Carbon Centre of Excellence, where international collaboration took center stage.
Miljenko Sedlar from REGEA introduced the Zagreb Digital Twin, a cutting-edge tool for energy planning and climate adaptation. By leveraging real-time data, the Digital Twin supports evidence-based decision-making, helping communities build resilience against climate change.
Stakeholders also explored ways to embed climate action into governance structures, ensuring that sustainability remains a priority at both local and regional levels.
A Roadmap for a Low-Carbon Future
The mission closed with a forward-looking discussion on skills development, particularly in areas such as Zero Energy Buildings, Passive House Standards, and sustainable construction methods.
By fostering collaboration and embracing innovation, the Midlands Energy Agency is positioning itself as a leader in climate action, demonstrating that bold, strategic initiatives can drive real change.
