Description

In 2024, renewable energy reached new heights. According to IRENA’s latest Renewable Capacity Statistics, the world added 585 GW of renewable power—over 90% of all new power capacity—bringing the global total to 4 448 GW. This marks a record 15.1% annual growth, with solar and wind making up nearly all new additions.

But while the numbers are impressive, they still fall short of what’s needed. To triple renewable capacity by 2030, annual growth must now average 16.6%, and current progress isn’t enough to close the gap.

Most of the growth happened in Asia, with China alone contributing 64% of global additions. Other regions lag behind: Central America and the Caribbean added just 3.2%, and growth remains uneven across countries. The G20 accounted for over 90% of the global increase, while many countries in the Global South are still being left behind.

IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera noted that while renewables are economically viable and scaling fast, we need more action and support—especially for developing countries. He called on governments to use their upcoming NDCs 3.0 to commit to stronger renewable goals and on the global community to boost cooperation.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres echoed this call, saying: “Renewables are powering down the fossil fuel age. But the shift must be faster and fairer.”

🔍 Key highlights from 2024:

  • Solar energy grew the most, adding 451.9 GW—China led with 278 GW, followed by India.
  • Wind energy reached 1 133 GW, with growth led by China and the US.
  • Hydropower hit 1 283 GW, rebounding thanks to additions in China, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and others.
  • Bioenergy saw a boost with 4.6 GW, driven by China and France.
  • Geothermal grew by 0.4 GW, led by New Zealand and Indonesia.
  • Off-grid solar nearly tripled in capacity, especially across Africa and Asia, reaching 6.3 GW by 2024.

To meet the targets set in the Paris Agreement and keep global temperature goals on track, countries need clear and measurable renewable energy commitments—and international support to make them a reality.
