Descriere

To meet its climate neutrality targets by 2050, the EU must urgently modernise its electricity grid. The European Court of Auditors (ECA) released Review 01/2025, offering a comprehensive look at the state of Europe’s electricity infrastructure and the major steps needed to align it with net-zero ambitions.

📌 Key insights from the report:

  • The EU's grid spans over 11 million km, serving 266 million customers, but much of it is ageing and unprepared for increasing electrification.
  • Achieving net-zero by 2050 requires an estimated €2 trillion in grid investments, far beyond current levels.
  • Flexibility solutions—like demand response, storage, and smart grid technologies—can reduce investment needs and congestion.
  • Slow permitting, complex planning, equipment shortages, and labour gaps are delaying grid expansion.
  • Regulatory and financial frameworks need reform to ensure grid operators can invest and consumers remain protected from rising energy costs.

The review underscores the importance of EU-wide coordination, localised innovation, and flexible energy systems—supported by clear regulation and strategic funding.
