The City Council of Valladolid decided to carry out the inventory of greenhouse gases, a useful tool to achieve greater efficiency as well as a reduction of its environmental impact. Previously, it had carried out the inventory of the city emissions on a biennial basis following the signature to the Covenant of Mayors in 2012.
Thanks to these efforts, the City Council of Valladolid is the first Spanish Council to be awarded of the “three sellos de la Huella de Carbono”. The Council decided to carry out the calculation and registration for 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 obtaining, in addition to the “sellos de Calculo” and “sello Reduzco” of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment.
The reduction commitment is embodied in the Action Plan for Sustainable Energy of Valladolid, within the framework of the Covenant of Mayors, which highlights the commitment of the City with renewable energies, in particular, photovoltaic energy and biomass.
In addition, it has been the first City Council to register an absorption project, “El Bosque de los Sueños”, which compensates part of its emissions corresponding to the years 2015, 2016 and 2017. There are only 20 projects in Spain and none of them are municipal. The City Council of Valladolid is the first Spanish City Council that has achieved the “sello Compenso”.
