The HyMantoValley project is creating a comprehensive green hydrogen model in the Po Valley, integrating production, high-pressure storage, distribution, and applications for energy, heat, and transport. This includes innovations like hydrogen-powered ships, trains, buses, and sustainable building systems.

As part of the larger €75 million Mantova Hydrogen Valley initiative in the Valdaro Inland Port—strategically located on two TEN-T corridors—HyMantoValley is set to establish a strong hydrogen value chain in the region. Key elements include:

  • Transition to Green Hydrogen: A low-carbon hydrogen plant, owned by SAPIO Group, will convert to green hydrogen using a 10 MW PEM electrolyser powered by a 13 MW solar farm with 4 MW storage, producing 1,500 tons of hydrogen annually and saving 14,000 tons of CO₂.
  • Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS): A new HRS will be set up near the port to support various vehicles.
  • Hydrogen Distribution: Local hydrogen distribution will include pipelines, mobile tank wagons, and a 500-bar high-pressure compressor for multiple users.
  • Zero-Emission Vessels: A hydrogen-powered barge pusher will enable emissions-free transport along waterways from Mantova to the Venice Sea Port.
  • Hydrogen Trains: Development of a hydrogen-powered locomotive platform for freight transport, featuring a new chassis design.
  • Hydrogen Buses: Six hydrogen-powered buses, funded by the local transport authority, will join the public transit fleet.
  • Sustainable Buildings: A public school will adopt a zero-emission hydrogen heating and cooling system.
  • Off-Grid Hydrogen Power: Testing an off-grid hydrogen fuel cell system to supply energy to remote users, supported by portable high-pressure hydrogen storage.
  • H2 Research Hub: A hydrogen-focused research and training centre will be managed by leading universities.
