Directorate-General for Environment

The European Commission is calling on European cities committed to sustainability to apply for the 2026 edition of the European Green Capital and Green Leaf Awards. These awards recognize and reward the efforts of cities striving to minimize their impact on the environment and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Virginijus Sinkevičius, Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans, and Fisheries, urges European cities to embrace the challenge and apply for the 2026 titles. The awards not only bestow a prestigious title but also offer a platform for cities to share success stories and inspire others in their green initiatives.

The European Green Capital Award

The European Green Capital Award, pioneered by the European Commission, beckons cities to embrace a greener, cleaner future, enhancing the well-being of their residents. In a continent where over two-thirds of the population resides in urban hubs, cities stand as pivotal players in driving the social, environmental, and economic metamorphosis championed by the European Green Deal.

Sixteen cities have won the European Green Capital Award to date. Among the prestigious winners of the European Green Capital Award are cities like Vilnius (2025), Valencia (2024), and Tallinn (2023), showcasing a collective commitment to sustainable living. Noteworthy seventeen smaller cities, including Treviso, Italy, and Viladecans from Spain (2025), have also claimed their place in the spotlight with the European Green Leaf Award, celebrating their strides toward a greener tomorrow.

As the journey unfolds, these cities become beacons of inspiration, lighting the path for others to follow in their footsteps.

Awards

Cities with over 100,000 inhabitants can apply for the Green Capital Award (€600,000 prize), while smaller cities, with more than 20,000 inhabitants, can apply for the Green Leaf Award (€200,000 prize).

Winning cities receive financial prizes to fuel the implementation of impactful environmental initiatives. The awarded funds not only assist in outreach efforts, actively engaging citizens throughout the winning year but also offer personalized feedback to all applicants. This comprehensive support ensures that cities not only gain recognition but also thrive in their ongoing commitment to sustainability.

How to Apply

Interested cities must register via the EU survey by 30 April 2024. This will access to relevant documents and the application form.

Regarding the evaluation criteria, independent experts will assess cities based on seven environmental indicators: air quality, water, biodiversity, waste management, noise, and climate change measures.

Finalists, expected around June/July, undergo additional evaluation and present their vision to the jury.
