Opportunity to Apply for Membership to the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change

The European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change is calling for expressions of interest from people interested in becoming a member of the Advisory Board. Expressions are due by September 15th.

The European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change is currently accepting membership applications for its second term, which will commence in March 2026 and end in 2030. The Board is made up of 15 independent senior scientific experts with expertise in disciplines relevant to climate science. Applications are to be submitted by email until September 15th, 2025, at 23:59 Central European Time.

What is the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change?

The role of the European Scientific Advisory Board is to provide independent scientific advice for the pursuance of fast and cost-effective climate mitigation pathways based on the best available and most recent scientific evidence to EU institutions. The Advisory Board was created in 2021 as a result of the European Climate Law which set out a binding objective of climate neutrality in the European Union by 2050 in pursuit of the long-term temperature goal set out in the Paris Agreement.

Who is Eligible to Apply? 

In order to be considered for this role, applicants must have the following: 

  • A doctoral degree (PhD) or equivalent degree in an area of scientific or technical expertise relevant to climate science,
  • At least 10 years of professional experience in the field of climate and environment sciences or other scientific fields relevant for the achievement of the European Union's climate objectives;
  • Nationality of one of the Member States of the European Union.

Evaluation and Selection of Members

An evaluation committee will create a shortlist of 20 to 30 eligible candidates to be interviewed. The Board will be selected based on criteria such as scientific excellence, experience in scientific assessments and advice, and expertise in climate and environmental sciences. The evaluation process will also aim to maintain a balance in gender, geography, and sectoral expertise.
