As part of the 23rd ManagEnergy Expert Mission, Vlasta Krmelj, Mayor of Selnica ob Dravi and CEO of ENERGAP (Slovenia), visited Amfipolis from 11–13 November 2025 to support the municipality with the scale up and acceleration of sustainable energy actions.
Amfipolis, a small municipality in the region of Serres, has recognised sustainable energy as a strategic priority. With a dedicated municipal energy department, the local authority is actively investing in projects that address the specific challenges of the area, such as coping with heatwaves, water scarcity, and high cooling demands. The municipality has already achieved significant results, including the digitalisation of the water supply system, and is planning initiatives such as the renovation of public lighting, the introduction of energy management in public buildings, and the creation of a “one-stop-shop” service for building renovation.
Deepening Knowledge and Strategic Planning
The first day of the Expert Mission focused on understanding the municipality’s energy landscape. Discussions with municipal staff explored ways to improve the performance of the energy department and exchange knowledge from other EU regions. Expert Vlasta Krmelj shared experiences from ENERGAP and other energy agencies, highlighting good practices that could inspire Amfipolis’ sustainable energy initiatives.
Engaging Stakeholders and Sharing Best Practices
On the second day, a workshop brought together municipal staff and regional stakeholders to discuss the local energy transition and climate action priorities. Sessions covered financing options, energy communities, outdoor street lighting, and strategies to promote the energy transition at the local level. Participants identified the main challenges, opportunities, and key projects that could advance sustainable energy in the municipality.
Accelerating Energy Action for Companies and Public Institutions
The final day concentrated on supporting local companies and public institutions. Through presentations and a participatory roundtable, participants shared ongoing projects and initiatives, discussed the main barriers to energy transition, and proposed solutions to enhance energy sustainability in Amfipolis. Expert Vlasta Krmelj provided guidance on leveraging EU co-funded projects and establishing regional collaboration, including the potential creation of a regional energy centre/agency.
Building Momentum for Greece’s Energy Future
The Expert Mission highlighted Amfipolis as a good practice example of proactive municipal engagement in the energy sector. With a committed energy department, strong regional partnerships, and an ambitious roadmap of projects, the municipality is well-positioned to expand its knowledge, participate in EU initiatives, and drive the local energy transition.
Through this mission, ManagEnergy continues to support local and regional authorities in Europe in developing sustainable energy strategies, fostering knowledge exchange, and enabling communities to actively contribute to the energy transition.
