EU Announces Over €600 Million in Funding for Sustainable Transport Initiatives

The EU has announced over €600 million in grants awarded to 70 projects that aim to decarbonise and electrify maritime, air, road transport and more through alternative fuel supply infrastructure.

The European Union has awarded more than €600 million in grants to 70 projects aimed at electrifying and decarbonising transport across the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).

The funding, provided under the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), will support the rollout of electric charging, hydrogen refuelling and other low-emission infrastructure in 24 EU countries. These investments form part of broader EU efforts to advance zero-emission mobility and enhance the sustainability of road, maritime, inland waterway and air transport.

The projects will deploy over 1,000 electric recharging points for light-duty vehicles and 2,000 additional recharging points for heavy-duty vehicles. Sixteen European airports will electrify their ground handling services, while 38 hydrogen refuelling stations will be installed for cars, buses and trucks, marking another step in scaling up the hydrogen economy.

Ports will also benefit from the integration of alternative fuel infrastructure. Twenty-four maritime hubs will introduce technologies such as Onshore Power Supply, electrified port services and ammonia bunkering facilities, supporting efforts to reduce emissions from shipping.

Following approval by Member States, the European Commission will now prepare grant agreements with project promoters. A new work programme and call for proposals will be developed in the coming months.
