Description
Cities across Europe are increasingly looking beyond traditional public funding to deliver on their climate ambitions. An upcoming webinar from the EU Covenant of Mayors, “The Jungle of Bonds: Innovative Finance for Cities in Transition”, will explore how bond-based financing can help local authorities unlock private capital for climate action.
The session is part of a wider learning series designed to support cities in navigating the growing landscape of financing options available to implement Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPs). The focus is on practical understanding .
Financing cities through bonds
As investment needs grow, cities are under increasing pressure to diversify how climate projects are funded. Climate and green bonds are emerging as a powerful mechanism to support energy transition projects, sustainable infrastructure, and long-term urban transformation.
By attracting private investors, bond-based finance can complement public resources while fostering stronger cooperation between cities and the private sector. When well designed, these instruments help align financial flows with local priorities, offering cities greater flexibility and resilience in delivering climate action.
What to expect
During the webinar, participants will:
- Discover the fundamentals of climate and green bonds as a financing mechanism;
- Learn from real-life European examples, from strategic planning to practical implementation;
- Explore replicable models that can inspire local action across Europe.
This webinar offers a valuable opportunity to gain clarity on innovative finance solutions and exchange with peers facing similar challenges in the urban climate transition.
