Description
The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), combined with growing volumes of Earth Observation data, is opening new opportunities for innovative services that support public policy, environmental monitoring, climate resilience and economic activity. To explore these developments and their real-world applications, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS) is hosting a hybrid workshop titled “Artificial Intelligence and Earth Observation: From Innovation to Services.”
Taking place on 9-10 March 2026 in Brussels (with online participation available), this two-day event brings together researchers, industry experts, data service providers, policymakers and digital innovators to review challenges and opportunities at the intersection of AI/ML and Earth Observation (EO).
Participants will hear about the latest advances in AI-driven data analytics, high-performance computing and digital twin technologies, and how they can be harnessed to transform EO data.
The workshop also highlights how AI and digital tools can strengthen flagship EU space programmes such as Copernicus, helping them deliver more timely, accurate, and actionable insights for climate, environmental and societal challenges. Discussions will cover evolving user needs, trustworthiness and scalability of AI solutions, and emerging use cases where innovation is already moving from pilot to practice.
This event is particularly relevant for anyone working with geospatial data, digital service platforms, climate and environmental monitoring, and space-based innovation. Whether attending in person or online, participants will have the chance to engage in high-level presentations, technical briefings, panel discussions and interactive Q&A sessions.
